Ancient carvings on stones. :-( I belive it is also correct to insert "stone" as a plural.

You must adhere to what was said in the audio. Do not try to add or remove anything to what you listened to. You will notice that in the audioscript, "stone" not "stones". Also, in the official answer key, "stone" is the only correct answer available.
